LOST REGISTRATION CODES

I have lost my registration name and code.

All requests for registration code replacements are handled through an on-line robot.

I have my registration code, but I can't find the exact registration name it corresponds to.

Treat this as a lost registration code, and have the on-line robot issue you a new name and code.

I have lost my registration code and the Lost Registration Code Robot was unable to get it back for me.

One of the following is true:

  • You have entered incorrect information into one or more of its reference fields. Please check your submission and try again.
  • You have requested that it search in the wrong year.
  • You originally registered your software under a different name, such as a company name, spouse's name and so on.
  • You haven't actually registered and you're not in the database.

Please verify your information and resubmit your request to the robot, or use the fee-based code search.

For the totally complete last word on lost registration codes, please visit When The Lost Registration Code Robot Turns You Down.

I submitted multiple requests to the Lost Registration Code Robot, but I only received one reply.

As is stated at the Lost Registration Code Robot page, to discourage cybercretins fishing for codes, the robot will only process one submission per user in a 24-hour period.

The Lost Registration Code Robot replied that my registration code is unavailable because my credit card was declined at the time of purchase, I attempted to dispute the charge for my purchase or my check was dishonored by my bank.

You're sunk — if you didn't pay for it to begin with, you can't get it replaced now.

I need my registration code back right now, and I can't wait for the robot.

Time is an illusion perpetrated by the manufacturers of space. This isn't one we can help you with.

The Lost Registration Code Robot didn't find my code. Can you look it up for me manually?

Yes we can — please see the fee-based code search page.

The Lost Registration Code Robot didn't find my code — my information is correct, but I think I entered the wrong year... or maybe I was living at a different address... or possibly I registered it under my brother-in-law's name... or that could have been the time I was hiking in Tibet, and all my mail was going to a post office box in Argentina. Can you look it up for me manually?

Please see the foregoing answer.

I have an Alchemy Mindworks install CD-ROM, so I must have had registration codes for all the applications on it at one time. Is this sufficient to get my codes back?

'fraid not. To begin with, the Alchemy Mindworks install CD-ROM includes evaluation and registerable versions of all our current software. We send the same CD to everyone, along with the registration codes to install those applications the customers in question have paid for.

In addition, the same CD is also an evaluation disc — we distribute it to users who want to install evaluation copies of Alchemy Mindworks' applications. As such, you could have one of our CDs and never have registered anything on it.

The only thing the CDs prove conclusively is that C=2πR.

I submitted a request to the Lost Registration Code Robot and I haven't heard back from it.

There are several possible reasons for this:

  • It can take up to one business day for the Lost Registration Code Robot to process your request, depending upon how busy our servers are at the time. Business days do not include weekends or Canadian holidays.
  • The robot will only process one request per twenty-four hour period and a maximum of three requests per month per application from each user. If you exceed these counts, it will not reply.
  • Please be certain that you entered your correct e-mail address when you submitted your request — you'd be surprised at how many lost registration code requests get returned with "user unknown" in their headers.
  • Please be certain that the e-mail account you had the robot send its reply to does not have a mail filter, white list, black list, spam blocker or quasi-intelligent gatekeeper that might have intercepted or redirected its message. Keep in mind that it's an automatic posting, and it looks like one. Spam blockers which look for this sort of thing might decide that your lost registration code was actually an advertisement for magic pills to make you a better lover.
  • Please be certain that your mail account is not over quota, or otherwise inaccessible when you submit a request to the robot.
  • We strongly recommend that you avoid using a free e-mail account, such as hotmail.com, netscape.net, yahoo.com and so on to communicate with the robot. While it's not our intent to comment upon the quality of the service provided by the free e-mail providers mentioned here, not all free e-mail providers are as reliable as one might wish — the fact that you get lots of mail at your free e-mail address doesn't preclude the possibility that still more mail is being sent to it, and not arriving.

E-mail isn't infallible. If you haven't heard from the robot, and none of the foregoing seems appropriate, please try it again.

I originally registered Graphic Workshop for Windows 1.0 or 1.1, or GIF Construction Set 1.0, and my registration code was a five-digit number or a word, respectively. The robot doesn't seem to be able to replace these for me. What can I do?

Not to put too fine a point on it, you're sunk. These applications — now referred to as the "classic" versions of Graphic Workshop and GIF Construction Set — were discontinued in 1998, and code replacement for them ceased at the end of 2003. Our database no longer includes records for customers who bought these products, and as such we're unable to recover codes for them. We'd also like to take this opportunity to point out that this software is known to have serious stability issues if it's run under versions of Windows later than Windows 98.

Nothing lasts forever save the earth and the sky, and we aren't too sure about the sky of late.

ENTERING YOUR REGISTRATION CODE

I have a previously-installed evaluation copy of the software I've registered and I can't find a place to enter my registration name and code.

For most Alchemy Mindworks applications, you can enter your registration name and code in the software as follows:

  1. Run the application.
  2. Click on the wrench button, more properly known as the Setup button, in the tool bar, or select Setup from the File menu.

A dialog will appear to accept your registration name and code.

In Alchemy Mindworks software without tool bars — The Ultimate Screen Clock, Pagan Daybook and Spies: A Cold War Daybook — right-click in the application window and select Setup from the menu that appears.

If you're registering an application which accepts both shareware and bookware registration, be sure you click on the Register as Shareware tab to enter a numeric registration code.

Having entered your name and code in Setup, exit the software immediately to ensure that your registration code is saved. Click on the X in the tool bar for applications that have one.

I have a previously-installed animation plugin for GIF Construction Set Professional or PNG/MNG Construction Set. How can I enter a registration code for the plugin?

All the animation plugins use the same registration procedure. Note that if you are trying to register one of the plugin sets, such as 3D Effects 1 or Elements 1, which include multiple plugins, you only have to do the following for one of the plugins in the set.

In addition, if you have both GIF Construction Set Professional and PNG/MNG Construction Set, you only need register each plugin once — registering a plugin in GIF Construction Set Professional, for example, will register the same plugin in PNG/MNG Construction Set, assuming itís installed in both applications.

  1. Run the host application Ė GIF Construction Set Professional or PNG/MNG Construction Set.
  2. Select the plugin to be registered from the Edit menu.
  3. Click on the Register button in the lower right corner of the plugin window.
  4. Enter your registration name and code in the fields provided. Make sure your name is all in upper case, and that itís entered exactly as it appeared in the registration code confirmation e-mail or on the printed invoice you received from Alchemy Mindworks. In most cases, registration names donít include punctuation or middle initials — check your confirmation message or receipt.
  5. Click on OK to close the Register dialog
  6. Click on OK in the plugin window to build an animation. You can discard the animation when itís complete Ė clicking on OK saves your registration code.
  7. Exit the host application by clicking on the white X in the red circle button in its tool bar.

I have a previously-installed evaluation copy of the software I've registered and a beg notice appears when the software starts, refusing to let me go any further.

This notice appears when you've used an unregistered evaluation copy for an extended period. It includes a timer. If you watch the button in the lower right corner of the dialog, you'll note that the timer is counting down. When it reaches zero, the button will activate, allowing this dialog to be closed.

You can now open the Setup dialog to enter your name and code, as discussed in the previous section.

Having entered your name and code in Setup, exit the software immediately to ensure that your registration code is saved. Click on the red X in the tool bar for applications that have one.

I entered my registration name and code and the installer or the software I have entered it in said my registration name and code don't match.

Alchemy Mindworks' registration codes are a complex checksum of the characters of your registration name. Each application calculates the checksum differently. If you've been told that your name and code don't match, one of the following is true:

  1. You entered your registration name incorrectly, or in a form other that the way it was presented with your code.
  2. You entered your registration code incorrectly, for example, with one or more digits wrong or some digits transposed.
  3. You have entered your registration name and code into the wrong application. For example, you might have entered a code for Graphic Workshop Professional into GIF Construction Set Professional in error. This is especially easy to do if you ordered multiple applications or plugins at once, such that all the codes appear on the same page.

Entering an incorrect registration code is by far the most common cause of registration names and codes not matching. Your invoice or order confirmation message will include a line like this:

Your registration name for use in these applications is:
LANCELOT PIGSWALLOW

If your invoice or order confirmation message actually listed your name as Lancelot Pigswallow, you have our sincere condolences.

You must enter your registration name exactly as it appears in this line. In this case, it's all in upper case, with no middle initial, and one space between the first or last name.

In many cases, your registration name will differ slightly from the name use in your shipping address. Be sure to use your registration name.

I am attempting to reinstall an Alchemy Mindworks application from an older CD-ROM and my registration code is not being accepted. Is this because I'm using older software under a newer version of Windows?

No — the registration codes are not dedicated to specific versions of Windows. If your code is not being accepted, something else is wrong. See the other items in this section for assistance.

Having said this, we strongly recommend that you download and install the current version of the software in question if you're using the latest version of Windows.

I click on the Register button in the About dialog or beg notice of an Alchemy Mindworks application and nothing happens, or no dialog appears to accept my name and code.

The Register button in the About dialogs of Alchemy Mindworks software accesses a manual page with information about registering the software, not a dialog to enter your registration code.

Please see the discussion about entering your code in existing evaluation software, above.

If you click on Register in an About dialog and nothing happens, you have a browser configuration problem. Please contact us for help with this.

My registration name as provided with my registration code is spelled incorrectly.

Ooops. Please contact our support desk and we'll issue you a new code with the correct spelling of your name.

My Graphic Workshop registration code has fewer digits than are required to complete the registration code field.

If your registration code has between two and five digits, it's a code for Graphic Workshop Classic or Graphic Workshop for DOS. Please see the discussion of Registration Codes for Older Applications, below.

I have a word rather than a number to register GIF Construction Set, and the registration code field won't accept it.

If you have a registration word for GIF Construction Set, it registers GIF Construction Set Classic. Please see the discussion of Registration Codes for Older Applications, below.

My GIF Construction Set Professional registration code is not accepted by the animation plugins.

That's as it should be. The animation plugins are registered separately, and have their own codes. Please see our e-commerce secure server order page to register your plugins.

BOOKWARE REGISTRATION CODE ISSUES

I've bought a book to register a bookware application but I'm in a raging hurry and I don't want to wait for the book. Could you e-mail me the registration code?

Regrettably, we can't. The bookware registration process is interactive. You'll need to enter your name into the Name field in the bookware application and click on Accept. The software will then ask you to look up a reference in the book you've ordered. You'll need to have the book in front of you to do this.

If you want to register a bookware application such that you receive a registration code by e-mail as soon as your order is processed, please select the shareware registration option for the application in question. This costs more than buying a book, but it will get you your code within one business day at the latest.

For more about the whole bookware / shareware situation, please see the fine print section of the web page for the software in question — this link is to the page for Pagan Daybook 3, but they're all essentially the same. You can also find this information the Register document of the Manual for your software.

The registration code fields in my bookware application won't accept text.

Make sure you've selected the Register as Bookware tab, not Register as Shareware. The Register as Bookware tab has a Name field and an Accept button.

I never received a bookware registration code — all I have is a book.

That's all you need. Bookware registers by having you look up a reference in the book it corresponds to. Here's how this works. This assumes that you're entering your registration code in a previously installed evaluation copy of the software in question — the procedure is similar for new installations.

  1. Open the Setup dialog.
  2. Select the Register as Bookware tab.
  3. Enter your name in the Name field.
  4. Click on Accept.
  5. The dialog will prompt you to look up a specific word reference in the book that corresponds to the application you're registering. Enter the requested word in the Registration Code field.
  6. Click on OK and exit the software to save your code.

I've given away the book I bought to register my bookware.

As is stated at the web pages for our bookware applications, Alchemy Mindworks' database does not keep track of book orders. We are unable to provide replacement registration codes for bookware.

I've followed the bookware registration procedure, but my software or its installer says my registration name and code don't match.

Make sure you have the correct book for the application you're trying to register. Having verified this, try it again with a variation on your name, such as the inclusion of a middle name or initial, to cause the registration logic to prompt you for a different word.

I'm trying to register Pagan Daybook II with the book Coven but it keeps saying my registration name and code don't match.

Make sure you have the correct edition of Coven. The registration only works for the Jam Ink or Ages edition of Coven by Steven William Rimmer, having the ISBN number 1-886508-13-5 or 1-895268-08-7. The cover of this book is green, with the title in white. The Ballantine edition of this book will not register Pagan Daybook II.

REGISTRATION CODES DISAPPEAR

I can successfully enter my registration name and code in my software, and no error messages appear. My registration code vanishes the next time I run the software, and my application reverts to being unregistered.

This indicates one of two possible problems:

  1. You are entering a valid registration name and code for a different application.
  2. You are entering the correct registration name and code, but the software in question is being prevented from saving it to your hard drive.

The first one's pretty easy to check.

The second problem usually arises out of permission issues. It's a common problem if you're running Windows NT4.0 or 2000. Please see this discussion of permission issues for more about this, and how to work around it.

There are a number of security applications which seek to protect you from malicious software by preventing applications from writing files to the \WINDOWS or \WINNT folder of your hard drive. It might be argued that they protect you a bit more than is good for you in this regard. This is where Alchemy Mindworks software stores its configuration and registration data. One of the security programs that is known to cause this problem is called "Window Washer." While we don't use these things in house, it's our understanding that they can be configured to prevent this behavior, or to permit specific trusted applications access to your \WINDOWS folder. Be sure to check this before you start looking for more esoteric causes for your vanishing registration codes.

I have installed an update in the same series as the one I registered and my software became unregistered. It reverted to showing me a beg notice. What happened?

You probably had a security application running during the installation of your upgrade which interfered with the installer when it tried to update the file where your registration code was stored. This one's dead easy to fix — just re-enter your registration code.

For most Alchemy Mindworks applications:

  1. Run the software in question — you'll probably have to wait for the initial beg notice to time out first.
  2. Click on the wrench button in the tool bar to open the Setup dialog.
  3. Enter your registration name and code in the Setup dialog.
  4. Click on OK.
  5. Click on the X in the tool bar to close the application.

If you re-run the software, it should be free of beg notices.

For Pagan Daybook 3 and Spies: A Cold War Daybook:

  1. Run the software in question — you'll probably have to wait for the initial beg notice to time out first.
  2. Right click in the application window and select Setup from the menu that appears to open the Setup dialog.
  3. Enter your registration name and code in the Setup dialog.
  4. Click on OK.
  5. Right click in the application window and select Exit from the menu that appears to close the application.

If you re-run the software, it should be free of beg notices.

I enter my registration name and code in my software, and the next time I check the Setup dialog, the Name and Code fields are blank.

This is as it should be. For your security, your registration name and code will not be readable once it has been entered into your software. To verify that your application has been successfully registered, open its About dialog — usually found in the Help menu — and check to see that it says it's registered to you.

REGISTRATION CODES FROM OLDER APPLICATIONS

I have a Graphic Workshop Classic registration code, with between two and five digits, which won't work with Graphic Workshop Professional.

You need to upgrade to Graphic Workshop Professional. As of January 1, 2004, there is no reduced-cost upgrade path to Graphic Workshop Professional. Please see our e-commerce secure server page to order a registered copy of Graphic Workshop Professional.

We should also point out that Graphic Workshop Classic was written to run under Windows 95, and is known to have some serious stability issues if you attempt to use it under later versions of Windows.

I have a Graphic Workshop for DOS registration code, with between two and five digits, which won't work with Graphic Workshop Professional.

You need to register Graphic Workshop Professional, and possibly to get the sprockets in your time machine cleaned and oiled. Please see our e-commerce secure server page. There is no reduced-cost upgrade path from Graphic Workshop for DOS to Graphic Workshop Professional.

I have a GIF Construction Set Classic registration code word which won't work with GIF Construction Set Professional.

Because of the low cost of the GIF Construction Set software, we are unable to offer a reduced upgrade price for registered users of the 1.0 series GIF Construction Set Classic package. Please see our e-commerce secure server page to register GIF Construction Set Professional.

We should also point out that GIF Construction Set Classic was written to run under Windows 95, and is known to have some serious stability issues if you attempt to use it under later versions of Windows.

I've lost my registration code for Graphic Workshop Classic, Graphic Workshop for DOS or GIF Construction Set Classic. The lost registration code robot doesn't seem to have listings for these applications. Can I get my code back?

We regret that we are no longer able to provide lost registration code replacement services for these older applications.

CHANGING REGISTRATION CODES AND MOVING SOFTWARE

I want to reinstall my Alchemy Mindworks software on a new computer. I have my existing registration code.

We recommend that you download the current installer for your software from our web page. There's no cost for doing so, and you'll have the latest enhancements and bug fixes for your application.

Run the installer through the Run item of the Windows Start menu and install your application as you would for a first-time installation. You'll be prompted for your registration name and code.

Please be sure to uninstall your application from your old computer, and delete its .INI file from your \WINDOWS directory if the uninstaller does not do so. There's a list of the INI files for all Alchemy Mindworks' current applications below.

I have a registration code registered to someone else, and I'd like the registration name changed.

We are unable to provide replacement registration codes under any name other than that of the party who originally registered the software.

I have an Alchemy Mindworks application installed on an old computer. When I move the installed software to a new machine, it forgets it has been registered and reverts to being an unregistered evaluation copy.

The correct way to address this problem is to reinstall you software from a new downloaded installer, using you existing registration code. In addition to restoring the application in question to a registered state, you'll have the latest version of the software you registered, will all the recent enhancements in place.

If you really want to do a "quick 'n nasty" file transfer, you'll need to copy the INI file from your old \Documents and Settings\... Application Data\Alchemy Mindworks\ folder to the \Documents and Settings\... Application Data\Alchemy Mindworks\ folder on your new system. Here are the names of the INI files which include registration codes for all the current Alchemy Mindworks applications and plugins.

REGISTERING PLUGINS

My GIF Construction Set Professional registration code is not accepted by the animation plugins.

That's as it should be. The animation plugins are registered separately, and have their own codes. Please see our e-commerce secure server order page to register your plugins.

I can't find anywhere to enter the registration code for my plugin.

  1. Run GIF Construction Set Professional or PNG/MNG Construction Set and select the plugin you wish to enter a code for.
  2. Click on the Register button in the lower right corner of the plugin.
  3. Enter your registration name and code in the dialog that appears and click on OK.
  4. Configure the plugin to create an animation and click on OK. Doing so will ensure that your registration code is saved when the plugin closes. You can discard the animation it creates.
  5. Exit the application the plugin has been installed in by clicking on the X in its tool bar.

Note that if you have registered both GIF Construction Set Professional and PNG/MNG Construction Set, and you install the same plugin for both application, you only need register it in one.

I have registered a plugin set — do I have to enter my registration name and code in each plugin in the set?

You only have to register one of the plugins in a plugin set, such as 3D Effects #1 or Elements #1. Doing so will register the entire set.

The Register button in the plugin I want to register is disabled.

This occurs if you have installed plugins in a unregistered copy of GIF Construction Set Professional or PNG/MNG Construction Set. You can only register a plugin if it's installed in a registered calling application. Register the calling application first, then register your plugins.

I tried to enter the registration code for the Graphic Workshop Professional RAW plugin set into one of the plugin Setup dialogs, rather than during installation. Every time I close Graphic Workshop and restart it, the RAW plugins unregister themselves. What's wrong?

This can occur under some builds of Windows with earlier versions of the RAW plugin. Upgrade to the current version of the RAW plugin — and the current version of Graphic Workshop Professional if needs be — and it will go away.
