The Indecent Images Print Collection includes pictures chosen to compliment the paintings at the Indecent Images page. Not all the pictures therein are included here — because not all of them are available in repro — and we've added a few house favorites that aren't discussed at Indecent Images. They're all breathtaking paintings.
Important: Unlike the other products sold by Alchemy Mindworks, orders for items in the Indecent Images Print Collection won't be fulfilled by us. Your prints will be shipped by AllPosters, a large art retailer in Emeryville, California. Because of the volume of pictures they sell, they're able to process orders for prints faster and charge you less than we could have, had we stocked them ourselves.
We've bought pictures from AllPosters for our own walls — they're an excellent company to do business with in our experience. While any products you purchase through this page will constitute a transaction with AllPosters rather than Alchemy Mindworks, we would like to know if you encounter any problems in dealing with them. The pictures in the Indecent Images Print Collection are usually referred to as "art prints" by people with a classical education and as "posters" by the rest of us. You can treat them as the latter if you like, attaching them to your walls with four thumbtacks, sticky tape or other adhesives from Walmart.
Needless to say, doing so would be deplorable and crude, and the likelihood of the artists in question rising up from their eternals slumbers and shrieking at you in the smallest hours of the night until your mind becomes unhinged and your dog leaves home is far from inconsequential.
There are several ways to mount and display prints which will enhance their appearance, extend their lives and keep your friends from thinking you're an uneducated boor who won a copy of The Lady of Shalott in a cockroach race.
All of the following suggestions will require that you visit a framing shop. Check your local phone book — for reasons not readily apparent, these things usually hide themselves along side streets or behind larger buildings, but there's at least one of them in most towns large enough to have its own gas station. A good framing shop will have access to all the technology required to transform your prints into pictures.
It's probably worth noting that most art prints come printed with borders or matts. A framing shop can have these trimmed off if you like, leaving just your picture.
Framing: The traditional form for displaying art is framing it. While you can buy pre-made frames at a hardware store, or even make your own if you're not unreasonably dangerous around power tools, a framing shop will be able to offer you really professional framing, and really nice frames. Typical framing shops will have hundreds of "moldings" — corners of the various frame styles they can use to frame your pictures, allowing you to choose a frame that suits your picture, your walls and your taste. If you like pictures framed with a matt — a solid color border between the picture and its frame — you'll be able to select a matt color that reflects colors in your picture, a pleasing effect when the whole works is banged together.
Framing shops usually dry mount the prints they frame to acid-free foam core board — rather than gluing them to a bit of old cardboard, as home-made frames typically entail — ensuring that they'll hang flat and not develop colors a few years hence that their artists hadn't envisioned.
A framing shop will be able to offer you a selection of glass types to help minimize glare and damage to your prints wrought by UV radiation if you plan to hang them in a sunny room. Alternately, they can frame your pictures without glass, and just varnish them, to address potential glare issues even more effectively.
It must be said that framing shops aren't cheap — the work they do is done by hand, and some of the moldings used to create picture frames are impressively expensive, even in small quantities. None the less, the results of taking your pictures to a good framing shop will be professional, durable and almost certain to keep the shades of long dead painters from frightening your dog, as discussed earlier.
Plak-It: Plak-It is an economical and attractive alternative to conventional framing. The Plak-It company of Largo, Florida mounts pictures on thin sheets of particle board, covers them with UV varnish to protect whatever's been Plak'd and bevels and paints the edges to hide the wood. If it sounds a bit complicated, it's worth noting that you'd typically take your prints to a framing shop, tell them to get them mounted by Plak-It and let them worry about sending them to the nearest Plak-It plant and dealing with the details. All you'll have to do is choose an edge color.
While you can have Plak-It prints fitted with picture wire to hang them, Plak-It boards come with pre-cut slots out back. Drive a flat-head screw almost all the way into your wall, slide a Plak-It picture over the screw and your picture will hang flush with the wall.
Canvas transfers: Canvas transfers are typically even more expensive than conventional framing, but the results are extremely cool. A framing shop can have your pictures pressure-mounted on real artist's canvas — the result of doing so will be a completely glare-free picture that looks like a painting. Canvas transfers can be attached to an inner wooden frame — again, as an artist's canvas would be — or framed.
It's worth noting that you can order pictures from AllPosters with some of the foregoing treatments already applied to them. Doing so is convenient, and typically somewhat less expensive than having a local framing shop handle your pictures. In defense of local print shops, however, being able to choose precisely the right frame style, matt color and treatment for your pictures will leave you with a unique object to hang on your walls.
